Projects: I Sewed a Skirt!

Yesterday I went through all of my old boxes in my parents garage and found my Mom's old box of fabric. The fabric was literally from the 80's and looked hideous. I had nothing to do that night so I decided I would make a skirt out of this ugly fabric hoping it would turn out cute. I think I did an okay job, but there are definitely some things I would have done differently.

I first looked all over Pinterest for a skirt pattern, but failed to find any good patterns. I did however find a few cute skirts that I decided I would put together and make my own. It took me a couple hours because our sewing machine is old and the tension was way off. I also was designing my own pattern so that took some time. If I were to make it again it would probably only take about 45min to make.

After I made this skirt I had a few people asking me how to make it so I decided I would post how I made it. I apologize for not having pictures of how to make it, but I will do my best to describe the steps. My waist is 27 inches so you will need to adjust to your own measurements.

Waist Band:

1. measure your waist. Add 3 inches. This will be the length for your waist band. My waist is 27 inches, so I cut 30 inches.
2. the width will be 4 inches.
3. Cut your fabric
4. iron: when you iron fold all of the sides in
                      - on the length sides fold in 1/2 inch on each side
                      - on the width sides fold in 1/4 inch on each side
5. Sew all of the folded edges

Sash:

1. Double the length of your waist band and add about 4 inches. I cut 64inches
2. The width will be 9 inches
3. cut your fabric
4. iron: Once again you want to iron your edges in
                        - on the length sides fold in 1/2 inch on each side
                        - on the width sides fold in 1/4 inch on each side
                        - on both ends of the sash fold in the corners the way you would fold a paper airplane
                        - fold the sash in half length wise
5. Sew it together

Body:

1. The width of your fabric, which will end up being where your waist band is, will be the same as your sash's length. I cut 64 inches.
2. the length will be as long as you would like. I cut 30inches.
3. cut your fabric
4. iron:
                      - on the top of your skirt fold 1 inch
                      - on the bottom fold 2 inches
                      - on the sides fold in 1 inch on each side
5. sew all of the edges
6. on the top of your skirt do a base stitch and gather the fabric to fit the waist band.

Putting it all together:

1. pin the waist band to the waist of the body. Sew the waist band to the skirt.
2. Make your button holes and sew on your buttons on the sides. If you would rather have a zipper on the side you would sew up half of the skirt and put in your zipper on these sides.
3. Find the center of your sash and sew it onto the back of your waistband.
4. Tie your bow and you have a skirt!
